Service Technician Mike Rocks is quickly coming up on his 25-year anniversary in the telecom industry, and has been an integral part of the Select Telecom team since 2001.
Mike started learning the business in 1988 under his father’s company, TES, where he worked for five years until they were acquired by TIE Communications. TIE changed hands (and names) several times in the following years, and Mike found himself sticking with them through it all, except for a quick year-long stint at the helpdesk at NEC. As he recalls, “I couldn’t stand being in cube!”
Mike returned to the field with TIE for a few more years, but eventually found the right balance of autonomy and stability at Select Telecom. “I love being able to be out on the road, setting my own schedule, and making sure everything gets done right,” he explains.
Outside of work, Mike is a talented home chef and musician. “I’m an Italian food type of guy, and I don’t care to follow recipes – which drives my wife nuts! I see what has to be done and just do it, and it comes easy to me.” He also loves music and is an avid guitar player. “I like every type of music – 70’s, 80’s, newer stuff – very much like [Installation Manager] Anthony [Durante]. And when it comes to playing, I like more acoustic type of stuff, but pretty much anything I can play.” Like any artist, though, he does have his limits: “Anything except for opera!”
